44th New York Regimental “Ellsworth’s Avengers” or ‘People’s Ellsworth’ descriptive book, 81p. folio, on preprinted journal sheets, c. Spring 1863 , listing the all the commissioned officers, including James C. Rice with note “Promoted to Colonel July 4th/62” Freeman Conner, S.W. Stryker, James McKown, and others. All companies are represented with full detailed roster, including description of soldier, enlistment date, place and officer, as well as any remarks. Several are listed as being killed with the battle and date recorded. VG. Wonderful historical information on this heroic regiment. The 44th New York Infantry was formed in August 1861 and mustered out in October 1864. During these three years they saw a tremendous amount of action losing over 700 casualties, they will forever be immortalized for their actions at Little Round Top on July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg were 111 of their comrades fell repulsing the Confederate advance at that turning point of the war.
