Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. quarto, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, June 8, 1863, with cover addressed to Ohio with Nashville cancellation, the letter reads in part: “…I feel proud to be a member of this fine army it has whipped the rebels on everyone of their chosen battlefields so far and we hpe the same good suceess will crown our old weather beaten and tattered banners in the future. If some of the ‘butternuts’ would be with us a short time we would teach them some manners and teach them to respect the laws and the American flag. We have about one hundred drafted nine months men in our regiment some of them were inclined a little to the Copperhead Doctrine but we cooled them down to zero…General Rosecrans ordered our division to stay here and hold this place…my best friend has just come back on Friday he was taken prisoner here in the battle and taken almost over the whole Southern Confederacy he seen some very hard times while there and they nearly starved him. He was in Libby prison and he swears he did not sleep twelve hours in a month on account of the lice, hunger and cold…On Saturday evening I saw a soldier of the 99th Ohio getting punished for stealing. He had his hands tied on his back and a board with large letters on his back with the word ‘thief’ on it. The regiment was formed in line of battle and he marched along in front of it with the drums beating the soyers march a file of four solders in front of them with fixed bayonets and a file of four following in the same manner but pointing to his back so he had to march right along….” More.
