Autograph Letter Signed, 2p. folio, July 16, 1863, and reads in part: “...We are well safe and sound and thank God we trust the rule of the mob - which has had full sway since Monday - has been broken. Yesterday there was heavy fighting in 6 Ave. 22 to 27 St. The military fairly mowed the rioters down by the use of canister grape. The Custom House had two brass 12 pounders inside and nearly 400 men and two cannon outside. The subtreasury had cannon placed at every street in the vicinity. Everything passed quietly - no noise - tho the scouts extended nearly to the scene of the operations. I went on duty at 3 PM in Co. I. Were given Springfield rifles with ball cartridges drilled until 7 PM had supper at Delmonicos at 8 then back to drill and guard duty...The 7th 65th Regiments armed yesterday and today we look for 4 other regiments so if the Devils in human shape are not yet satisfied they will get theirs...the judgement fall on Ben and Fernando Woods and the like who have stirred up the mob to do all tehy have done indirectly. I was not sorry to see the money lenders who have pampered to the lowest classes look wild at their prospective losses. The city will never again be left without some soldiery to put bullets to those funds...” VG. The New York Draft Riots inflicted property damage of $1.5 million to $2 million, and it has been estimated that total casualties ran as high as 1,000.
