Autograph Letter, 6p. folio, Office of the Provost Marshal, Barrancas, Florida, April 5, 1863, and reads in part: “...I had a letter from George last week - he says taht he was among those troops who marched under Banks to the attack on Port Hudson and gave me the details of his march - When he wrote they was ten miles from Baton Rouge. ...The time of Enlistment of my clerk in teh office expires on the 26th of this month and I am going to get George detailed to the place...I have seen a large number of Maine men have received commissions in Negro Regts. While I believe in the negro element of this war for fighting purposes, I would not like to have charge of them. They are many of them would fight to the bitter death but many would be dangerous to their own friends by their timidity and stupidity. I have a boats crew (five in number) that I think in a fight with a decent chance would whip any fifteen rebels I ever saw. They fight with will when it becomes necessary. I have a boy twenty years old with me, by the name of Sandros....one of the most faithful fellows I ever saw...” VG.
