Autograph Letter Signed, “Edward D. Carpenter Co. C 8th Reg. C. V. 2nd Brigade 1st Div. 18th A.C.”, who was twice wounded and died of wounds received at Fort Harrison, Virginia, September 29, 1864. Letter is 2p. octavo, September 28, 1864, the day before he was mortally wounded, Near Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, with cover addressed to his cousin in Springfield, Massachusetts, and reads in part: “...I have nothign to do today in the military line, but I ought to wash and do some sewing. Everything is quiet along the line of our Corps except the Rebs keep up a shelling of the canal and signal stations. A good many Rebel deserters are coming in our lines now. I was on picket Sunday night and four ‘Johnnys’ came in on my post. We are allowed to exchange papers with them now and I exchanged a paper and done some little trading with them...” VG.
