DIX, John (1798-1879) Union Major General, commanded 7th Corps, and is famous for declaration "If anyone attempts to haul down the American Flag, shoot him on the spot." Autograph Letter Signed, "John A. Dix" 2p. octavo, October 20, 1864, Headquarters Department of the East, addressed to a member of the Chamber of Commerce of New York, apologizing for not attending a "meeting called to pay tribute of respect to the memory of Mr. Josua Bates of London…" VG....plus; PORTER, Horace (1837-1921) spent 1864 -1865 as one of U.S. Grant's aides-de-camp and rose to become a brigadier general before war's end. His intimacy with Grant deepened in the years 1869-1873 while he served as Grant's personal secretary. Typed Letter Signed, “Horace Porter” 1-1/2p. octavo, December 6, 1893, and reads in part: “…I should be most happy to unite in this compliment [dinner invitation] to a gentleman whom I esteem personally, and whose labors in bringing the guilty in our City to punishment I fully appreciate; but an imperative previous engagement for the evening selected will prevent the possibility of my participating in the proposed dinner…” Mounting remnant, else VG....plus; SWAYNE, Wager (1834-1902) Union general who lost a leg at River’s Bridge (Salkahatchie) South Carolina, February 2, 1865. Typed Letter Signed, “Wager Swayne” 1p. quarto, December 11, 1893, on his stationary, addressed to Herman Oelrichs, pertaining to an invitation for dinner with Mr. Delancy Nicoll at Delmonico’s....plus; Autograph Letter Signed "Jno M Gear", 3 1/4 pages, quarto, November 17, 1879, Des Moines, Iowa to Brevet Major General A. McD. McCook, Washington, D.C. Written entirely on Iowa Executive Department stationery and signed by Governor Gear, this letter praises Iowans in the Army of the Cumberland during the Civil War. It reads in part: "...The record made by the Army of the Cumberland will never cease to be a cherished part of American history; and among the Titans given to enduring fame by the war of the great rebellion, eminent position will ever be accorded him...it was the fortune of Iowa to be represented...in the combats in which your great army was engaged...". Sheets stapled together. Fine condition.
