Autograph Letter Signed, “J. Lyman Bliss Co. G. 4th Reg. Wis. Cavalry” 4p. octavo, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, February 9, 1864, with cover, it reads in part: “...During the past two weeks I have been on duty day and night...Do not be surprised if ere long you should hear that I have been captured by the rebs, for they have taken no less than 26 of our men within the last month & wounded 5...we have taken as many of them besides wounding several & killing four. Previous to this (ie the 10th Ult.) we were taking some of them almost every day, while we lost none, this emboldened us so that we grew reckless of danger & of course met with some losses, for instance one of our Lieuts. went out with 16 men & attacked 50 rebs, putting them to flight & taking 25 men & 40 horses but while coming in with their booty they came upon 300 of the enemy & but two of our men escaped although the Lieut. evaded them for 6 hours but was then taken - since then he (Lieut. Earle) has got away from them & remained in the woods for several days, but hunger compelled him to apply at a house for food when a woman betrayed him & he was afterwards hunted down by bloodhounds & retaken...A few days since we went over the river to Grosse Tete & captured 12 Confeds among them a major & captain - yesterday 60 of the enemy surprised a post (30 miles from here down river) of 16 of our men capturing 8 & wounding 2 the others escaped...” More.
