A nice war-date map measuring approximately 18" x 13" printed July 25, 1864 after being drawn in the field by Gen. Sherman's topography engineers with the aid of a city council map of Atlanta. Plainly evident are that city's streets, railroad lines, public buildings, iron foundry, and that city's free school and African Methodist Church. Issued just three days before the historic battle of Atlanta, this map was no doubt used by one of Sherman's officers and helped in the capture of the city. Also, interestingly enough there is a period pencil sketch of a Civil War era fort on the verso. From the personal papers of an noted Union surgeon. Some folds indicating that it was used in the field, else very good.
