BUTLER, Benjamin Franklin. (1818-1893) Anti-monopoly and Greenback (National) Party candidate for President in 1884, as a Civil War Union general, his "Butler's Folly" led to a dismissal by Grant. He served in Congress representing Massachusetts. Manuscript Letter Signed, “B.F. Butler” 4p. quarto, on printed Head Quarters Department of Virginia and North Carolina, ‘In the Field, June 7, 1864”, it reads in part: “...Surgeon McCormick is Medical Director of this department, having charge of hospitals now holding more than 4,000 sick and wounded as well as the entire transportation from this Army to Fortress Monroe, Pt. Lookout and elsewhere...It is utterly impossible to dispense with his services for such length of time...as we are in daily expectation of attack or offensive movements...Public duty and the dictates of humanity to the suffering soldiers of my command would alike prevent my granting any such leave...Surgeon McCormick, an officer of the Army of the 25 years standing, sustaining a most excellent reputation came to meet me at New Orleans in the Spring of 1862 as Senior Medical Officer, and has served with me ever since when in the field. I can bear most earnest testimony to his efficiency as an officer, his skill as a medical man, his uprightness as a man, his courtesy and bearing, and his most unswerving loyalty...” VG.
