Two letters written by Albert Whitney, Co. H, 1st New York Dragoons, while imprisoned at Hampton Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Hampton Prison is a virtual unknown in POW letters, as only a handful have come to the market. These two letters are accompanied by a copy of a third letter from Whitney datelined “Hampton Prison.” Both letters are octavo, one in pencil the other in ink, and are dated May 16 and June 5, 1864, they read in part: “...[5/16/64] I am well. I was taken Prisoner on the 7th and on the 8th we came here on the cars, Ebb Law is here too, he is well, we are enjoying our selves the best we can we have enough to eat, keep up courage...[6/5/64]I have been in here four weeks next Tuesday, we rather expect to go to Georgia tomorrow, but I can not write much keep up good courage...if it is Gods will for me to return home then I will do all I can for the comfort of my loved family...” Both are VG.
