A prohibitively rare war-date, ca. July 1864, hand-drawn topographic map showing the interior of Rebel held territory between Marietta, Ga., and the Chattahoochee River as it appeared during the middle of the Atlanta Campaign. This map measures approximately 19 1/2" x 14 1/2", is drawn on onionskin paper, and entitled: "Information Map 3rd Div. 23rd Corps" indicating that this map was used by Maj. Gen. Jacob Cox's division during its movements against Joe Johnston's after he evacuated Kennesaw Mountain following their bloody brush with Sherman's army on June 27, 1864. One location of note shows a line of fortifications labeled: "Rebel Earthworks" running along a ridgeline just south of Marietta near the farms of Copeland and Henderson. Perhaps this information saved a number of Union soldiers from certain death! Wear and folds showing that it was actually used in the field with some very slight paper loss, otherwise very good and ready for framing.
