Manuscript Document Signed, 1p. folio, Head Quarters 14th Regt. N.Y.S. Militia, April 18, 1864, addressed to Lieut. Col. Fred I. Locke, A.A. Genl. 5th Army Corps, and reads: "…The undersigned Officers of the 14th Regiment of New York State Militia have the honor to request that the Enlisted Men and Officers who were enlisted on the 18th day of April 1861 for the period of the war, be discharged from the Service of the United States…We claim the above discharge from the fact that an enlisted man named William Burns who was enlisted with the Regiment the 18th day of April 1861, and transferred to the 1st Regular Cavalry December 3d 1862, was discharged the service of the United States this 18th day of April 1864…." Signed by twenty-three officers. With Autograph Endorsements Signed by Brig Genl. James WADSWORTH (1807-1864) Mortally wounded and captured at Wilderness, May 6, 1864, Maj. Genl. Gouvernor K. WARREN (1830-1882)Union general WIA at Gettysburg, forced to resign by Sheridan, and finally by Major General George MEADE (1815-1872) Defeated Lee at Gettysburg, Commanding General, U.S. Army of the Potomac, 1863-65, who pens "Respectfully forwarded for the discussion of the War Department as to the time this term of service of this regiment will expire. In my judgment, it is detrimental to the interest of the service to hold men after the date upon which they can found a possible claim to their discharge…" Also contains a list of the dates that the companies of the 14th/84th NY were enrolled and mustered into service. Fine.
