A rare and much sought after war-date newspaper announcing the surrender of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and the end of the Civil War. A good clean issue of THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, April 10, 1865, totaling eight large folio pages. Bold block lettering proclaims: VICTORY!! VICTORY!! over a finely engraved winged eagle holding a Grant-Victory banner in its beak. The joy at the end of the war is evident with other headlines reading: GEN. GRANT'S SUN OF AUSTERLITZ! LEE FINDS HIS WATERLOO. SURRENDER OF THE REBEL ARMY!! GEN. GRANT'S TERMS ACCEPTED BY LEE…REBEL ARMY PAROLED!! Printed on the very day that Lee's army laid down its arms this newspaper gives a full accounting of the joyous events that unfolded just hours before, and is undoubtedly one of the very first newspapers to send the happy news nation's war-weary people. Usual toning, and folds, else very good.
