SHERMAN, William T. (1820-1891). Union general famous for his march through Georgia to the sea, accepted the surrender of the last major Confederate force under Johnston. Autograph Letter Signed, "W.T. Sherman" 3p. octavo, April 1, 1880, Washington, D.C., Head Quarters of the United States, addressed to General Henry L. Abbot, and reads in part: "…Genl. Getty was here yesterday, and shew here his programme of Exercises…Getty gives you the whole of Tuesday evening for your lecture. Now shall I give formal orders - with Genl. Wright…or shall I simply ask Genl. Wright to order you. Sometimes to avoid the necessity of orders I simply make the orders on the duplicate…" VG.
