WHERRY, William Macky (1836-1918) Brevet brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. Wherry served as aide-de-camp to General Lyon in 1861 and General Schofield in 1862. He earned brevets for Atlanta, Franklin (TN), Nashville, and the Georgia and Tennessee campaigns. Wherry received a Medal of Honor for Wilson's Creek, Missouri (August 1861). He went on to fight in the Spanish-American War. Autograph Letter Signed, "Wm. M. Wherry Bvt. Col. U.S.A.", 3p. octavo, January 20, 1880, addressed to General Abbot, in part: "…I am in receipt of your letter…which I read to General Schofield, who desires me to say that your proposition is so very acceptable that he assures you it will meet with a hearty response from the Institute [U.S. Military Service Institute]…" VG....plus; Printed Letter with facsimile signature of General W. VG....plus; KELTON, John Cunningham (1828-1893) Brevetted Brigadier General, USA, March 13, 1865, for most valuable and arduous services during the war both in the field and at headquarters. Later promoted to Brigadier General and Adjutant General of the Regular Army and retired in 1892. Partly-printed Letter Signed, "J.C. Kelton"1p. quarto, War Department, October 24, 1866, addressed to Brvt. Major J.B. Fairbanks (1839-1908) a member of the 36th Massachusetts Infantry, honoring Fairbank with his brevet. VG....plus; Typed Letter Signed, “G.C. Smith” 2p. quarto, January 15, 1890, Helena, Montana Territory, from the Office, Disbursing Quartermaster, U.S. Army, addressed to General Tompkins. It reads in part: “...I called on Mr. T.C. Power who assured me that he was favorably disposed toward your promotion to the Quartermaster-Generalcy...that he was committed to no one else...I got an opportunity to see him [Col. Sanders]...stated to him the fact of your being the next in rank and order of regular promotion, and of the injustice of your being ‘Jumped’...He remarked that he was not absolutely certain that he would be a Senator, but that I could write you that if he did become one, he would do all he could for you....” About VG....plus; CORBIN, Henry Clarke (1842-1909) Brevet Brig. Gen. March 13, 1865, for faithful and meritorious service, Retired a Lt. General., also had service with the U.S. Colored Troops. Group of three Autograph Letters Signed, “Henry C. Corbin” during the late Spring of 1890, all from Chicago, and addressed to General Tompkins. They read in small part: “So far as I can see our chances are at least as good as the best. I am going to Cleveland on the 30th and will have a talk with the President and those near him about you and urge as strongly as I can your claims...In the meantime don’t let the Enemy make you lose your temper and talk back as to your politics...The President is big enough to comprehend that honest, capable, deserving men may differ with him - and his party - your opinions are honest ones...” More. Folsom, and reads: “The receipt of your letter....requesting that you be furnished with an abstract of the latest ‘monthly Reports on progress’ of National Cemeteries in the states of Virginia, the 2 Carolinas, Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, & Illinois, is respectfully acknoledged. The enclosed abstract of the Reports above mentioned is herewith furnished you...” Fine. Accompanied by 3p. folio, “Abstract of various items from teh last ‘Monthly Reports on ‘Progress’ of National Cemeteries in teh States of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missour, Illinois and Maryland”, signed by General Card. This report lists the names of the cemeteries, ie. Fredericksburg, the number of men employed there, the expenses for the month as well as expenses required to complete the work. Fine. VG....plus; SHERIDAN, Michael Vincent (1840-1918) During the Civil War he served as a volunteer aide to his brother, General Phil Sheridan, at the battles of Perryville, Kentucky, and Stones River, Tennessee, October 1862 to January 1863. Appointed First Lieutenant, 2nd Missouri Volunteer Infantry, September 7, 1863. Then served as Captain, Aide-de-Camp, May 18, 1864 to the end of the war on his brother's staff.
