A very sharp and detailed stereoview showing Gen. Grant's favorite horse Cincinnati. Cincinnati was the son of Lexington, one of the fastest four-mile thoroughbreds in the Antebellum America. Grant's was given Cincinnati after the battle of Chattanooga by a man who made the general promise to never mistreat him, or give him to anyone who would. Cincinnati became Grant's favorite battle charge from that time forward until the end of the war, and even rode him to Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. Grant owned Cincinnati until that horse died peacefully in 1878. In this stereoview Grant's horse handler holds Cincinnati who stands at-the-ready while saddled and armed with pistols. Published by Taylor, Hartford, CT., on an orange mount. Near fine.
