BEAUREGARD, P.G.T. (1818 - 1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter which started the Civil War. Carte-de-Visite, signed on front “G.T. Beauregard 1865” with verso inscribed by him “To Miss Hallie C. Early with the kind regards of Genl. Beauregard New Orleans La. Decber. 15 1886.” By Washburn of New Orleans. The signature on front is light, the verso is bold. Two repairs, one at lower left corner the other at top left. Beauregard purportedly sat for this view in the summer or fall of 1865 while in New Orleans, and had signed several copies. This copy he most likely had kept and then given to Miss Early, who is a possible relation to General Jubal Early, whom Beauregard was in business with during the 1880s.
