Model 1840 artillery saber, 39 1/2" in scabbard; 32 1/2" blade, 1864, Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Civil War artillery saber is distinguished from the more familiar cavalry model by its simple "D-guard" brass hilt. This specimen's deeply toned hilt is stamped with rack number "35", the "5" of which is weakly struck. The leather and wire around the grip are intact, however show some wear. The blade is of bright, fresh metal with only minor nicks. Its ricasso is stamped "Ames Mfg Co Chicopee, Mass." on one side with the verso showing the inspector's mark "G.W.S." between "U.S." and "1864". The scabbard has minimal light rusting and is also stamped with the rack number "35". Overall a solid weapon in Fine condition.
