Autograph Letter Signed, Alanson R. Piper, 1st Michigan Infantry, 3p. octavo, April 14, 1865, Camp near Appomattox Court House, and reads in part: “...I could eat almost anything as we have had no rations for the last five days...I think this Corps (5) will go back to Petersburg and Richmond and lay there for some time. I have heard so at least. Enclosed you will find a star taken from the 38th North Carolina regt. after they had surrendered and stacked their arms in front of this regt. with their colors also a piece of silk from the 34th N.C. and a piece off of the 55th Va. regt. We are now encamped on the field that General Lee surrendered his army on...” VG...plus; Star removed from the colors of the 38th North Carolina, approximately 4-1/2”x4-1/2”, brown star with blue background.
