LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865) Sixteenth president of the United States, assassinated at the end of the Civil War. Autograph Endorsement Signed, “A. Lincoln” on verso of a 1p. octavo letter addressed to him, Lincoln writes in full: “If Hon. Mr. Van Valkenburg will say distinctly in writing that he deserves the discharge of Reuben C. Ward, he shall be discharged. A. Lincoln. April 5, 1864.” The letter by Van Valkenburg to Lincoln is dated April 5, 1864 and reads “Mr. President. I have never asked the discharge of a soldier, except according to the regulations adopted by the War Department for that purpose, but in this case, under all the circumstances I do ask that Reuben C. Ward be discharged ffrom the service...” With additional letter by Van Valkenburg to Lincoln pertaining to the same case dated April 1, 1864, and reads “Mr. President. The bearer Mrs. Ward is a widow residing in My district. She has only two sons both in the 50th Regt. N.Y. V. Since their enlistment her husband has died and she desires taht one of her sons be discharged to take care of her at the family. If consistent with your views I would be glad to have her wish gratified...” Fine. All framed together with image of Lincoln.
