Autograph Letter Signed, 3p. octavo, pencil, April 22, 1865, Washington, and reads with great content it reads in part: “..every building in the city both private & public are draped in mourning. I wish they would take it off for it makes a person always feel so sad when they go out and see it. I will now tell you all I know of the Assassination of President Lincolnon Friday night. The President & Mrs. Lincoln, General Grant, Miss Harris & Maj. Rathbon were to be there at the Theatre, so your Mother and Pap went. They waited some time on me to come down for I was to go with them but did come so they went round themselves. The President and his party were rather late coming in. The performance had commenced your Mother said that they all played so well that it appeared like if they wanted to please the President, but poor fellow little did he think it would be the last time he would be there for in the second scene of the third act he was shot. Your Mother says that the right of Booth as he jumped from the box his foot caught in the flag that was hung around the box, he fell flat on his back and his head took the stage. Your mother said she could hear it crack, but he was no sooner down than he was up and out. He still held on to the pistol and dager it was supposed the dager was for Grant, but he was not there he went home that evening . Your Mother and I went up to see the President on Tuesday he looked very nice very much like himself. We saw the funeral it was the longest procession I think I ever saw. We were on the top of Gardeners house....here is a picture of Booth the Assassin of President Lincoln...” VG...plus; original cover...plus; partial unmounted albumen image of Booth as mentioned in the letter.
