CHAUNCEY, Isaac (1772-1840) American naval commander who distinguished himself against the Barbary pirates and in the War of 1812. Autograph Letter Signed, “I. Chauncey” 1p. quarto, U.S. Ship Washington, Portsmouth, October 23, 1815, addressed to the Secretary of the Navy, and reads in part: “...The bearer Midshipman John Evans has requested permission to pay his respects to you for the purpose of stating his claims to promotion...he has always conducted to my satisfaction and is svery smart and attentive to duty...” Near Fine.
