Autograph Letter Signed, Dr. John S. Griffin, 3p. quarto, December 18, 1840, Fort Wheelock, East Florida, with integral leaf addressed to Capt. R. C. Buchanan, of the 4th U.S. Infantry at Fort Gibson, Arkansas. It reads in part: “...I have been transferred so often from one post to another, that I did not at any one of them feel sufficiently at home...I have no hopes for the present of the war being terminated. The whole country east of the Swanee is occuppied by regular troops, on the West by Florida Volunteers, under the command of General Reid, the volunteers do nothing, and we scout all the time which amounts to the smae as there is never an Indian or even a trail seen by any of the scouting parties. Col. Worth is here (thatis in Florida) with the Republics own,...he has not as yet achieved any renowned deeds in arms, theough he marches through this country in all the pomp and circumstance of Glorious War...There is at present some hopes that Tyger Tails band will come in, about 20 men women and children here come into Fort King and given themselves up to Col. Reily, among them is said to be a brother of Tyger Tails, who reports that that worthy chief is tired of the war and has determined to cave in, he however may be playing his old game, taht is to hold a talk to get a fresh supply of powder, ball &c if he does come in Capt. Paige and his delegation will have done some good at last...” VG.
