Autograph Letter Signed, Dr. John S. Griffin, 3p. quarto, January 19, 1841, Fort Wheelock, East Florida, with integral leaf addressed to Capt. R.C. Buchanan of the 4th U.S. Infantry, in part: “...as to news there is none, except a stray murder occassionaly. I suppose you will hear of their killing Mrs. Montgomery - Aunt Sherwood, and four or five men of this Regiment (7th Infty)...they attacked Fort Walker, a volunteer post, last week and killed one negro girl, and wounded a woman, upon the whole they kick up a devil of a row, whenever it please them to do so, and the worst of it is, we cant help ourselves. Col. Harvey made an expedition into the everglades, and killed and hung ten warriors and took some twenty-five or thirty women and children...Col. Riely was on a scout the other day and came up on two camps one thirty strong, the Indians took it very cooly, pulled out their passes - and of course were not molested - two or three of the delegation were with them, I understand....” VG.
