Autograph Letter Signed, “Welman” 4p. quarto, Matamoras, July 5, 1846, and reads in part: “...Yesterday was the glorious fourth...the morning was ushered in by the Federal salute making the echoes ring again with the roar of patriotic cannons. At nine we had a grand Brigade Review which was followed by a prayer from one of our Chaplains....I had the honor of officiating as Reader of the Declaration of Independence - after which Capt. Ogden delivered an oration. His effort was a fine one....Ogden is a man of high order of mind and true hearted...I have become exceedingly attached t ohim...By the way Gen. Taylor attended our celebration at the close of which he passed our troops in review & complimented our men very highly on their appearance &c. He is a fine clever old gentleman, rough - but cordial, a plain blunt soldier - it did me good to listen to the brave old man speak to the men as he visited after the parade the several companies with which he had been invited to dine...” More.
