Autograph Letter Signed, “Saml. Chew Hepburn” 2p. quarto, August 7, 1846, Fort Leavenworth, and reads in part: “...We will have here about fifteen hundred volunteers; one thousand mounted and five hundred Mormans to serve as Infantry. In this State of progressive democracy all officers are elected and as often occurs men are elected who are little suited to fill the posts to which they are elevated. An amusing scene took place in one of the camps a few days since. A company arrived and was mustered into service. At the elecction of field officers the Captain of the Company was elected Lieut. Colonel. The Lieutenant of the Company thought he then had it in his power to exercise more authority than had formerly done but the boys believed in the power to repeal and revoke. A meeting of the company was called to elect a Captain of the Company addressed them as follows: fellow volunteers we have made a damned poor lieutenant out of a first rate shoemaker. I move we elect some other in his place and allow him to return home. I would nominate a man aobut his size so that his uniform will not be to him a loss. And they voted him out of his office...” VG.
