Pair of letters by Edward F. Nicholls, 4p. total, quarto, c. 1846 both written while serving in Mexico, the first is from Monterey and is addressed to Colonel William Pugh in Louisiana, this letter is written to his sister, it reads in part: “…The news of your darlings death came upon me as a crushing weight…I had forgotten that he was mortal & you could lose him…” More in this same vein. Fine…plus; Letter by Nicholls addressed to his father Thomas C. Nicholls in New Orleans, no date, written “Off the Balize” it reads in part: “…I am unwilling to get out of sight of the Louisiana shore without sending back to you another farewell…The Detachment now on the way to Texas is composed of about 900 men - the greater part consisting of the companies attached to Col. Davis’ Regiment. The Colonel accompanies us I understand on the steamer Col. Harvey. His staff is with him but the Lieutenant Colonel (C.K. Johnson) & the various company officers are on board of your boat - the steamer Mary Kingland. A ship the Onidaka is lashed alongside. She carries a portion of the volunteers of our Regiment. We will tow here down to the Balize & then cast her off. I have made acquaintance with almost all the Regimental officers & find them a remarkably clever set of men…I was afraid that I would find myself too different in military knowledge but a few hours have set my mind rest….The men who belong to our company are all contented & I believe disposed to like their officers…” More.
