Autograph Letter Signed, Edward Fitzgerald Nicholls, 4p. quarto, July 12, 1846, St. John of Fair View, St. Juan de Buena Vista, Mexico, 45 miles above Matamoras, & on the Rio Grande, and reads in part: “…We expect to march in a week hence as far as Reynoso…then push forward boldly for Camargo, Monterey, & Saltillo…& await the arrival of the 12 month volunteers…During all this march, Genl. Taylor has formally promised the Louisiana Brigade, the post of honour - the only volunteers accompanying the Regulars he will throw us in advance whenever occasion offers….It is reported 30,000 Mexican troops will defend the post, were they 100,000 we would still keep on, but I fear there will not be found one twentieth of that number there & that they will evacuate the town without making any resistance. At Saltillo, if the Mexican commander possesses any knowledge of generalship whatever, we are sure to have a battle, it is susceptible of a strong defense, & occupies an important position if we are to have any ulterior operations. Genl. Taylor says we must take it ‘Nolus Volus’ & Nolus Volus I am confident we will have it on or before the middle of September. We do not expect a fight at Camargo - Canales is in its neighborhood with a force of 1500 men, but it would be hard to induce him to come within range of our artillery. It is rumoured indeed, that he is more inclined to side with us, than to defend the town he was commissioned to hold against our Army…” More. VG.
