Autograph Letter Signed, E.F. Nicholls, 3p. quarto, October 9, 1846, Monterey, Mexico, with integral leaf addressed to his mother in Louisiana, it reads in part: “...Placed upon its true ground (not on the ridiculous scaffolding invented by Gov. Johnson) the refusal of the troops to serve beyond the term of their legal enlistment - could in such a case have been not merely extenuated but amply justified...It was not whether we would serve twelve - but whether we wd. serve six months. The illegality of our original enlistment was admitted & we were called on to say whether we intended or not to avail ourselves of that illegality to escape from Mexico. The Brigade by an almost unanimous vote demanded their discharge - & from that moment Welman & myself decided let what would happen never to leave Mexico, until we had met at least once the enemy in battle. Subsequently the proposition to enlist for twelve months was communicated to the Brigade, & under the order tendering the proposition our Company was organized & mustered into service...” More. VG.
