Autograph Letter Signed, E.F. Nicholls, 4p. quarto, November 21, 1846, Saltillo, and reads in part: “...When I sawy we - I mean Genl Worth’s Division, less Genl. Smith & the 7th Inftry (the jewels of the division) accompanied by the squadrons of cavalry under Col. May, taht went along as escort to Genl. Taylor who was determined to see the position of the country for himself - Genl. Worth halted us at Santa Carbarrina...Gen. Taylor halted his army before the Resaca & in face of the enemy allowed them to break ranks & go for water....we reached Saltillo - as we approached the place an impertinnet letter was sent out to Genl. Taylor by the Governor of the Province - denouncing in violent language the conduct of the Americans & declaring that if he yielded the town without a struggle it was not from want of inclination & spirit to resist but solely because the govt in withdrawing the troops had left him entirely helpless - helpless indeed. In a city of the population of Saltillo an American General would have found men or women enough...Santa Anna - reciprocating Gen Taylors liberation of his Mexican prisoners...released some American prisoners he had captured & sent them to us...under escort...” Much more.
