Autograph Letter Signed, “W.J. Worth Br. Majr. General” 2p. quarto, May 4, 1847, Perote, Hd. Qrs. 1st Divn. U.S.A. in Mexico, addressed to Lt. E.F. Nicholls, of Blanchards Company, Louisiana Volunteers, and reads in most part: “…The time is near at hand when the gallant company of Louisianians with which you volunteered and in which you are an officer is, from expiration of service about to separate from those with whom it has mingled and always with distinction in many combats with the enemy….It has been my duty, as it was a pleasure, to bear official testimony to your gallantry and good conduct on all occasions and I now have to add my sincere thanks for the cordial, disinterested and able assistance you have rendered since becoming a member of my staff…Notwithstanding the urgent circumstances which demand your presence at Home, I know how cheerfully you would remain & share the fate of the campaign; but the duty that calls you hence is, in my judgement, paramount. I am therefore compelled, reluctantly to insist upon your return to those duties…” Fine.
