Autograph Letter Signed, “M. Matlock” 3p. quarto, May 7, 1848, Molino Del Rey, with integral leaf addressed to Maj. McEwen in Kingston, Tennessee, with block VERA CRUZ cancellation, it reads in part: “...Our trip down the Tenn. and Mississippi rivers was rather a novel scenery and presented a spectacle of uncommon grandure. Our voyage, across the Gulf was not so animating owing to no varied scenes for the imagination...We are in full view of the mountains...The popcutapelt has been ascended to the top, and the American flag hoisted. This is said to be the highest mountain in North America...thier churches...are adorned with many ornaments and figures...Perole...is the strongest fortified place that I have seen in Mexico...The war question is discussed here daily, some say that peace will be made, and others say it will not, so it is a difficult matter for one to come to a definite conculsion. The Monitor, the most influential paper, say that peace will be made by the fifteenth of this inst. I think this is doubtful. Now is the golden hour with Mexico, and if she rejects the Treaty it will be that much worse to herself. The American Army has taught those who warned them whatever she undertook victory she would have at the commencement of the war we were all warriors in heart and feeling, the youth of the land buckled on their armor and hastene to the field of battle...Our Noble General Scott has won an immense number of honors. Success has crowned our army from the Gulf to their Capitol, their Capitol has been taken then the cup of glory filled. Our national and personal rights were vindicated...” More. VG.
