Autograph Letter Signed, “Lieut. R.K. Byrd”, 3p. quarto, April 7, 1848, Malino Del Rey near the City Mexico, with integral leaf addressed to Maj. William McWein in East Tennessee, wtih block “VERA CRUZ” cancelation, the letter reads in part: “...the long looked for treaty has at last arrived in the City from the United States. The American Congress made some slight modifications to it but what they were I have not yet learned. The Treaty left here some three days ago for Quaretero the place where Mexican Congress is sittin. It is general though here that the Treaty will be ratified by the Mexican Congress although some of our leading men here have different opinions about it. The Mexicans had an Election in the city Mexico...for members to their Congress. Our troos all had to leave the city on the day of the Election...most of the Roane Boys would now like to pay their Quarter and be off. They have all seen the elephants track but they won’t show us the beast himself...The Roane boys have never had a chance to show thier spunk...” VG.
