DEWEY, George (1837-1917) Naval officer, served under Farragut during the Civil War. In May 1898 he directed the action in Manila Bay that totally defeated the Spanish fleet (during which he is said to have commanded his flagship's captain, "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley.") Typed Letter Signed, "George Dewey" 1-1/2p. quarto, October 19, 1907, on his "Office of the Admiral of the Navy" stationary, it reads in part: "…A good many years have passed since we first met, and you know that I am no longer a young man and cannot do with impunity the things that young men are constantly doing. The state of my health has forced me to a realization of the fact that my days for banqueting are over…" VG....plus; DANIELS, Josephus (1862-1948), Sec. of the Navy throughout WWI Typed Letter Signed, "Josephus Daniels" as Secretary of the Navy, 1p. quarto, on Navy Department letterhead, January 13, 1914, addressed to Sereno Pratt of the Chamber of Commerce pertaining to the Naval Militia of New York. VG....plus; Typed Letter Signed, "Josephus Daniels" 1p. quarto, November 5, 1919, addressed to John D. Rockefeller, declining an invitation by the Chamber of Commerce of New York. VG.
