On May 18, 1919 Harry Hawker and Lt. Commander Mackenzie-Grieve left Newfoundland attempting to cross the Atlantic in a Sopwith. Radiator failure downed their aircraft some thousand miles out to sea and they were fortunately rescued by a Danish ship in the area. Their salvation, however, remained unknown to the authorities who discovered the plane's wreckage. Lot of two photographs and three copies of letters pertaining to the Grieve-Hawker adventure. Two copies of two prints mounted to a 7" x 10 1/2" matt, 1919, England. A penned inscription on one matt reads "Capt. A.C. Wilvers May 23 - 1919". Captain Wilvers of the S.S. Lake Charlottesville was involved with the recovery effort and is shown standing by the fuselage of the downed Sopwith. The accompanying image shows the aircraft floating nose down in the Atlantic. Water stains on both matts, else VG...Plus; Three official mimeographs of typed letters regarding the flight. Fine condition.
