WELDON, Felix de (1907-2003). Prolific Austrian-born American sculptor who spent nine years creating the massive bronze Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. The sculpture is based, of course, on Joe Rosenthal's famous photograph showing Marines planting the American flag on Mt. Suribachi. Uncut sheet of 50 Iwo Jima commemorative stamps, 9" x 10", ca. late 1940's. These stamps first went on sale on July 11, 1945. This sheet is signed "Felix de Weldon" in the lower margin. Excellent condition.
