ALEXANDER I (1777-1825) He reformed the government while maintaining the autocracy of czardom. He was defeated by Napoleon at Austerlitz in 1805 and again in 1807. The victory over Napoleon in 1812 established him as the leader of the Third Coalition and liberator of Europe. Partly-printed Document Signed as Czar, in Russian, 1p. oblong folio, vellum, St. Petersburg, January 23, 1805, reads in part: “...on the thirty-first of December of 1803, have promoted and instituted Aleksandr Ivanchikov, who has been serving as a Collegiate Assessor, to Court Councilor, just as WE hereby grant and institute, commanding all OUR subjects to recognize and respect the above Aleksandr Ivanchokov as OUR Court Councilor in a fitting amnner...” With wax seal. Large signature. Fine.
