HALL, Abraham Oakley (1826-1898) NY County District Attorney later succeeded John T. Hoffman as Mayor of NY, as part of the powerful "Tweed Machine". Manuscript Letter Signed, "A. Oakley Hall Mayor" 2p. octavo, August 4, 1871, New York, on Executive Department City Hall stationary, addressed to William Dodge, President of the Chamber of Commerce, and reads in part: "…In view of the gross allegations continually made by a partisan journal in relation to the accounts of the City & County of New York, the expenditure of the public moneys, the public debt & the city resources, the undersigned respectfully request that the Chamber of Commerce appoint a large & influential committee of well known and upright citizens to make a full & exhaustive examination of the public accounts & condition of the public debt, and then report the result when completed to the people of this city…" VG....plus; CHOATE, Joseph (1832-1917) New York City lawyer, was counsel in important cases such as the Tweed Ring prosecution, Standard Oil antitrust cases and income tax cases. He later served as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain (1899-1905) and was head of the U.S. delegation to the second International Peace Conference at The Hague (1907). Autograph Letter Signed, "Joseph H. Choate" 2p. octavo, December 12, 1893, 52 Wall St. addressed to Herman Oelrichs, Esq. , declining an invitation to dinner in honor of DeLancey Nicoll "on the occasion of his retirement from the office of District Attorney…" VG. Accompanied by a second ALS written the same day making the same statements as the first. About VG. (2 items)
