ZALMA REHINE (1757-1843). Baltimore merchant and Jewish communal leader; a founder of the "RICHMOND LIGHT INFANTRY" and UNCLE of Leeser. It was in his house that the first Baltimore Jewish religious services took place and from which the congregation of that city grew. It was to his home in 1824 that Leeser first came. TWO single page letters (blank on reverses) each entirely in his tiny yet readable, neatly penned hand, with full signature, to Leeser. (1) BALTIMORE 1833 (month and date in Hebrew, the year in English). "On Purim we have spent as usual, eating good things. In addition we have had three shad sent us from Norfolk. I hope you had a merry time of it among your friends. Since I left you we have had snow and hard frost which I expect you also had plenty of. My dear Isaac, take good care of your health, it depends much on you to make me happy; also the welfare of nephew Jacob will be adding to increase that case of mine which is required to make an old uncle spend his few years and days happy. Give my best respects to all my good friends which have all treated me so well when among them…I shall be happy to return same when in my power. I have to thank the almighty for the return of one year to my 75'th year to make it 76'th…" and regards to various friends. Exc. (2) Very short five line note from Baltimore, Dec. 19, 1836 asking if Leeser had received his check for $300 sent ten days earlier. "David Cohen came to my house Sunday with the check and I sent it that evening by express mail. Let me know if received." Reverse sheet with address and postmark. Exc. Both together.
