Two page letter to his Uncle Zalma Rehine in Baltimore (who played major role in his early life). Written on a special printed letterhead of "NEW RAIL ROAD LINE, BETWEEN PHILA AND BALTIMORE…FOR THE CONVEYANCE OF MERCHANDISE BAGGAGE…ON ANY PACKAGE…" From Phila. March 27,1838 showing receipt at the Phila. office of the railroad by the agent, accompanying a package (of cough syrup which Leeser mentions) and hence the reason for sending this via railroad. Leeser writes: "When I got back to town I found that Mr. Gaskill had not dispatched my books. Their non-arrival now easily accounts for the ACCOMPANYING PARCEL [in which there is] a small packet of lozenges which I desire you may use and that you, through them, will receive the blessing of your great Father to be relieved from your unpleasant cough. I send you also three extra sets of the Prayer books, the first and second volumes I left in Baltimore. When I got back I found that Mr. Mara had taken Mr. Moses' books, having left them at Mr. Allen's store before I went away…" and more about his books and titles. Also: "…it is feared that business will be bad this spring, as also in New York. I shall not go on til after the holidays, as next week there would be too much confusion in all the houses I might call at. …May the approaching holidays be days of joy and health…" Signed: "Your nephew Isaac Leeser." Light aging, but exc. Back sheet acts as cover with address and postmark. A superb and classic example of Leeser's handwriting.
