A member of a very prominent Jewish family in that community HENRY JACOB LABATT. Two very beautifully penned letters; each single page, each entirely in his neat hand with fine autograph signature (1) New Orleans August 1, 1848. Quite detailed describing various people he has collected from or who still owe money for the Occident with financial details about commissions, postage costs and titles of a few books he was selling: "gilt back daily prayer book $3.00…one catechism .75 cents" and quite a few prominent Jewish names of subscribers, including Judah Touro; ends: "…I shall affirm if possible some subscribers this month and shall use [some of the back issues] I have, presenting them to gentlemen of our persuasion." Exc. +. Back sheet acts as cover with address and postmark. (2) New Orleans Dec. 28, 1850. Letter opens: "I write…to inform you that having returned from College and about to make a permanent stay in this city to study law and become a member of that honorable body of yclepted [i.e.'so-called'] lawyers. Mr. Hart and the Rev. Mr. Nathan consulted me about establishing a permanent and full agency for your works and pamphlets including both Spanish and German Minhag. Should this meet with your approval…give me all the necessary and satisfactory directions to be put in possession of your books…accounts and subscription lists in our city and also mentioned in the Occident… that such an agency is established [giving address of his brother's office]…should you accede to my proposition I will do my best to advance the general cause and assist in any way." Exc. +. Both together...
