After opening letter, explaining why he is deficient in paying back subscription dues for the Occident, while sending a small payment towards his account and explaining his current predicament of "…having embraced a new life and being at present not settled in occupation, with an increasing family and the necessity of [foregoing] other luxuries…when Mr. Gutheim left this city, I undertook the study of the law in his place…and being with one of the first practitioners in the city, AND THE ONLY ONE OF OUR CREED in the profession in this state, with 3,500 co-religionists in the city and a practical knowledge of business and commercial affairs generally, I flatter myself that I shall succeed eventually. …I am engaged closely in my studies and cannot well attend to the matter [of paying my bill in full]…Mr. Moses asked me to act as your agent [but I think he is best able to handle it]…we had a very heart rending occurrence here among us. An infant son of Mr. Moehring, on returning from school went by a fire and his clothes caught fire and in a few moments the devouring element encased him and his spirit fled to his God. His father is in one of the Southern states and will not know his bereavement until he arrives home…we are endeavoring to erect a new edifice for the congregation of which I am Sec'y, the K. K. Beni Israel. We have cleared the ground adjoining our present synagogue and our lot is worth $20,000 which…is a vast sum to raise for the purpose. Now we have to raise the means for a building…and an appeal will be made to our brethren throughout the States as soon as plans are matured [more description of the project]. Absolutely necessary for us to build to accommodate the increased multitude around us, tho' we find much difficulty in our object. Our form is the German ritual. We much require a competent [Hebrew word] we have one who we cannot well be rid of. He answered very well 15 years ago when he got a hundred dollars per annum, but the progress of the age and the progress of our congregation calls for another and a better man. He is an incumbus We ought to be rid of, but with a family of seven children, sympathy tends many persons to retain him. The other congregation's Rev. H. A. Henry as pastor progresses well." Exc.

He writes that he is the only Jewish lawyer in the entire state of Ohio. Neatly penned lengthy two page letter in the hand of and fully signed JOSEPH ABRAHAM from Cincinnati 16 July, 1851 to Isaac
