Neatly penned single sheet (blank reverse) letter from Wheeling, West Virginia March 21, 1854 to Isaac Leeser, Editor of the most important Jewish periodical of the 19'th century "The Occident." Entirely in the hand of and fully signed "Daniel Stein" who was acting as the Occident's agent in that community. He writes: "we have an organized congregation here numbering from 25 to 30 members and have also a Synagogue. There are residing here 17 Jewish families" (gives names of all officers of the congregation) "…we have just elected Mr. Joel Eppinger…lately of Cincinnati to act as Schochet, Hazan and Teacher." Also writes of sale of bibles to two members, remits money for the Occident to Leeser and directs him to send the periodical to a new subscriber, whose name he furnishes, continuing: "…I will cheerfully continue my exertions to get subscribers for your invaluable publications." Normal light aging, but exc. +. That congregation was founded 1849 only as a cemetery association; the first congregation meetings held in a private residence.
