Boldly, neatly penned single page letter entirely in his hand and fully signed by M. C. MORDECAI OF CHARLESTON, S.C., Jan. 5, 1855 to Isaac Leeser, Phila. Acknowledges Leeser's note and request: "I beg to say to you, as you well know I have not only a large family but sisters and aunt to support and the claims upon me are heavy. Therefore I regret I cannot comply with your request to grant a pension of $300 per year to Miss Judah. I spoke with David Judah when last in Baltimore about Miss Judah. He is a single man, with but himself to support. I believe [he is able] to extend relief to her and I can hardly think she is in such great distress as you apprehend." Exc. Lightest aging.
