Neatly penned two page letter (single sheet) entirely in his hand and signed by S. KUTTNAUER from Baltimore, May 13, 1867. Written entirely in German (accompanied by a recent English transcription). Addressed only "Dear sir" but likely intended for Isaac Leeser. He writes: "My friend Mr. Gotthelf of Washington recommended me to you. I came from Seligenstadt near Frankfurt…my son who works here as a bookkeeper, as well as his boss Mr. Schoenberg asked me to come to act as a cantor and teacher for the [Hebrew] school. I came with my wife and three children, but came too late and the job had been given to someone else, although the president of the congregation knew about it. That is my start in America [he adds Hebrews words which translate to 'all beginnings are hard']…I know my job and was a preacher and greatly acknowledged. I ask you to help me find a favorable job if that is possible. A job worthy of a gentleman skilled in learning [Hebrew words translated to 'in the liberal religion, according to the laws of Moses and Israel']. I bring excellent character and business references and written testimonials showing I have been in that line of work for 30 years [more Hebrew words translating to 'a wise man will understand]." Some normal, lightest aging. Exc.
