Includes (No. 1) presentation inscribed large, heavyweight six piece bronze N.Y. state militia "MARKSMAN" medal with one crossbar also marked "SHARPSHOOTER" and another "U.S.V. 1898" bottom large bronze cross with NY insignia in wreath. Reverse beautifully hand engraved large letters fancy style "CHAS M. HOFFMAN…CO. F…12'TH REG'T N.G.N.Y…APR 25, 1898." (No. 2) Very lovely gold finish (possibly solid gold) two piece medal; top pin back bar in full detail shape of American Eagle and shield; very large 6 pointed gold and white enamel cross suspended below with design of two soldiers in relief in center and "1898"; lettered in gold on the white enamel rim "HEBREW VETERANS…WAR WITH SPAIN." Reverse beautifully inscribed fancy style "PRESENTED TO PAST COMMANDER CHAS M. HOFFMAN JAN. 23, 1915." About mint condition, with orig. blue / white ribbon. The organization was the predecessor of the J.W.V. The medal quite rare. (No. 3) Presentation two piece bronze medal. Large relief Jewish star with outer border of wreath. Center with relief Eagle and U.S., lettered "JEWISH WAR VETERANS OF THE UNITED STATES" reverse inscribed: "PRESENTED TO CHARLES M. HOFFMAN FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE 1928." Top bar in shape of colonel's shoulder strap with gilt finish and silver eagle. Original ribbon. (No. 4) Two piece bronze Spanish-American War Veterans reunion badge. Large top piece with design of mountain along upper border; markings "40'th National Encampment, Portland, Oregon Sept. 11, 1938" with design of Span-Am insignia suspended below a circular bronze medal, relief marked "Battleship Oregon" with design of that exact warship. Red and yellow silk ribbon. Pin back. (No. 5) Three piece "Spanish War Veterans" organization medal; design of soldier, sailor, ship in center and names of Cuban and Philippine campaigns. Silk ribbon with design of U.S. flag. (No. 6) Two piece brass "JEWISH VETERANS OF THE WARS OF THE REPUBLIC" medal. Large Jewish star, "U.S." in center. Top bar figure of liberty holding scales of justice and relief "1776-1918"; silk ribbon in design of U.S. flag. The organization was the first name of what ultimately was the "JWV." (No. 7) Official state of New York issue Spanish-American War Veterans medal. Circular relief markings "To one who served the nation with honor 1898-1899-1900." Obverse with large full scene of infantryman holding rifle. Exc. Just the silk ribbon worn and a bit tattered. (No. 8) Official U.S. Army issue round bronze medal relief marked "FOR SERVICE IN THE SPANISH WAR" obverse with eagle shield cross rifles and canons etc. Original green / yellow silk ribbon; pin back. (No. 9) Small all metal round boutonniere with original red / white / blue silk ribbon in center; the item worn in the lapel of a jacket to signify membership in the Span-War Vets. (No. 10) Small two piece bronze "MARKSMAN" medal with pin back top suspended white enamel and bronze cross with target in center and relief "12'th Reg't Assoc'n." (No. 11) Three small miniature bronze medals for marksmanship each with the large relief numeral "12" in center for that regiment of N.Y. militia. (No. 12) Brass insignia helmet plate with eagle over seal of state of New York over their Latin motto "excelsior" with numerals "12" separately affixed to center of shield. The "history of N.Y. in Spanish-American War" lists Charles Hoffman as a member of the 12'th New York Infantry Regiment having enlisted in June, 1898 to serve two years; mustered in as private Co. F that date; promoted to corporal March, 1899 mustered out with the company at war's end 1899. It is believed that he later served as a first lieutenant with the 27'th infantry division during World War I that information does not accompany material and needs to be verified.
