HENRIETTA SZOLD (1860-1945); philanthropist, ardent Zionist, the moving spirit in the founding of Hadassah and undoubtedly the most outstanding Jewish woman of the latter 19'th and early 20'th century. Three original letters of hers with fine original penned autograph signatures. Two are entirely in her hand (single pages each); one letter typed but with fine autograph. All on letterheads of "The Jewish Publication Society of America / Phila" (various print styles of each letterhead). At the time she was editor at that famous society. All letters addressed to noted American Judge Mayer Sulzberger of Phila. prominent in Jewish national and international affairs. (1) Letter Oct. 21, 1896 in her hand regarding manuscript from Mr. Lipsitt which had not yet been returned. Requests any information about him from the judge and inquires about a letter from Methuen & Co. "offering us 'A Handful of Exotics.'" (2) Letter June 23, 1903 in her hand asking if letters from two correspondents require a formal acknowledgment and asking for instructions; also, "Fanny S. Loth of St. Louis submitted a manuscript containing a series of tales embodying in romantic form some of the most noteworthy passages in the early history of Jerusalem…" asking if Sulzberger wishes it assigned to committee. (3) Typed letter December 31, 1906 sending proof sheets of Hyanson's "History of the Jews of England" to a Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Gross and more about them. All three letters are exc.
