Autograph Letter Signed "Eben Smith", 2 pages, quarto, November 10, 1830, New York to his brother, Captain William S. Smith, Boston, Massachusetts. The letter reds in part: "...The New England you now was sunk or...capsized...I shall give you my story and you may compare this with those that you have heard before...there was no lookout that night for it wasn't very dark...Capt Blanchard came and called me and said the boat was a sinking. I turned out and went down...they were trying to get the jib over the bows to stop the leek...they got out as fast as they could...and swung out to lower the boat...I went to the starboard boat and found her full of people. I jumped in and we lowered her down without any noys or trouble...we went along side of the schooner and discharged our passengers...I gess we went to boston in a portland schooner and there I found that I had got a bad cold...". Small splits along folds, stains, and aging. Good condition.
