Manuscript Document Signed, 1p. quarto, October 29, 1840, Hyde County, North Carolina, and reads in part: “...In obedience fo the foregoing order of Survey to us Directed we the undersigned Zosobabel Garkins, Caleb B. Stowe, and Levin Burrus, have this Day reparied on board fo teh Schooner J. Bourne of Kenebunk commanded by Capt. Bell...we make the following report the said Schooner is lying in the breaks on the seabeach of Cape Hatteras striking heavily the water almost a continual breach over her with the water up to the cabin floor. We do therefore deem it most proper knowing the Danger to which sd vessel & cargo is exposed in such a condition to advise the said Capt Bell to have the said Cargo landed from sd schooner and her mutuals saved...” VG.
