Autograph Letter Signed, “John Fountain” 1-1/2p. quarto, Vicksburg, January 25, 1841, addressed to William Sohier in Boston, Mass, it reads in part: “...I have intended so soon as I could get some cotton on to make a payment on the note. I shall be unable to pay more than a third or half this Season and do Justice to other creditors. All I ask is indulgence and the last Cent sahll be paid...All the Banks have failed and of course I having to trade with it I was constantly subject to loss...I kept a house going on which I have in a Town called Granada above Carrolton on the Yellowbusho River in this State. There we have more trade than Money...This Country is so much in debt that it takes everything that is raised to pay old debts...We have but a very small circulation as New Orleans has to furnish its own State ours and Arkansas....I am not a Land Speculator nor am I a Bank Gambler. I do not owe a sheave or a dollar to a Bank in the World nor is my name on any man’s paper for One Cent. That is I am security for no body. The times are hard but few goods selling therefore I can promise but little...” VG.
